Health and Human Services

The Milwaukee Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has a proud legacy of advancing the health and wellness of Milwaukee’s Black community through the work of its Health and Human Services facet.

Our initiatives are designed to educate, empower, and inspire healthy living across generations—from toddlers to centenarians.

One highlight of our work is the Links Walk for Healthy Living, an annual event that raises awareness about heart health and encourages physical activity, especially in communities of color.

We are also honored to be a recipient of a Black Kidney Awareness, Resources, and Education (K.A.R.E.) grant, supporting our efforts to increase awareness of kidney health in our community.

Kidney disease disproportionately affects Black Americans, who are nearly four times more likely than White Americans to develop kidney failure. Although Black Americans make up approximately 13% of the U.S. population, they represent about 35% of people living with kidney failure, according to the National Institutes of Health.

To help change these statistics, we’re sharing real stories from our community—stories of courage, love, and lifesaving generosity.

“He gave me life—and I got to give it back.”

When her father faced complete kidney failure while she was away at college, Markesha Grayson didn’t hesitate. Guided by faith and love, she became his living kidney donor—saving his life and becoming a passionate advocate for kidney health education in the Black community.

“Two days to live.” That’s what doctors told Kobena-Marcus Collins before emergency dialysis saved his life.

His journey from end-stage kidney failure to a second chance at life is a powerful reminder of resilience, gratitude, and the importance of health awareness—especially for Black men, who are too often hit hardest by kidney disease.
